Matrix of Needs - Building Safe Organisations (Note time is AEST)

NPSN EAG Member Professor Bob Bowen

The research behind Professor Bob Bowen’s Matrix of Needs identifies that our most important human need is for safety.  Not just physical safety, but all forms of safety, including physical, psychological, and emotional safety—throughout the life of an individual, and an organisation.

After Safety, our Core Needs, are for Subsistence and Bodily Integrity, Communication, and Attaching Relationships.  These needs are so central to the human experience that they begin in the womb. When the needs of individuals are met, the needs of the organisation are easier to address.

This session highlights the essential importance of organisations arranging their resources in a way that ensures safety for all people. It unpacks priorities for leaders to achieve both individual and collective safety. These include:

·       improving communication and reducing communication challenges that are a primary, fundamental concern for everyone

·       cultivating attaching relationships that are pivotal to human development

·       identifying how achievement and social relationships can be used to meet both the needs of the individual and the needs of the organisation.

The session will focus on strategies that increase the social and relational capacity of the workplace in order to prevent workplace bullying, violence and aggression and increase the safety that is the essential state of organisational survival.
